How To Find A Family Therapist

Are ready to find a family therapist but don’t know where do you start?

Google and Word of Mouth-  Ask around your community for recommendations and then of course google it. Most therapists have a website these days and Family therapy is a specialty so listing that in your title will narrow your search.

Psychology Today- This is a directory that is nationwide that allows you to select for you zip code, specialty need , payment needs and so on. Most therapists list themselves in this directory.

Once you have a few names start calling and expect to be put on a wait list.

Consider your schedule needs as family- What days and times can everyone participate. This simple issue can make or break landing an appointment.

Consider how you will fund the therapy- Insurance or Private Pay?
Family therapy can be a many months long investment depending on the needs and the number of people in your family. It will take at least three sessions for a therapist to really begin to understand the dynamics of your family system.

Clinic vs Solo Practices- If you find a recommendation to clinic this could result in you getting into an appointment sooner just because a clinic is built to have higher volume. The other advantage to a clinic is that if family members would like to do individual counseling as well, then the logistics are simpler when dealing with scheduling and payments.
The advantage of a solo practice is that the clinician often has more experience than clinicians at a clinic.
